From E-Waste to Enterprise: Circular Energy Opportunities in Sierra Leone

Ms. Oke Wunmi
October 24, 2026

This webinar explores how Sierra Leone is turning the growing challenge of electronic waste into an opportunity for rural electrification, green enterprise, and youth employment. As the use of electronic devices, solar technologies, and electric mobility expands, so too does the need for practical approaches to managing end-of-life batteries, motors, inverters, controllers, and solar PV components.

‍

Drawing on CEPREC’s work in Sierra Leone, the session will examine how discarded EV and solar components can be repurposed for micro- and mini-grid applications, strengthening decentralised energy systems while advancing circular economy objectives. It will also share insights from engagement with industry and mini-grid operators, highlighting the role of second-life batteries and power electronics in improving system reliability and performance.

‍

The webinar will further explore the enabling environment required to support this transition, including regulation, take-back systems, vocational skills development, and Extended Producer Responsibility. By linking e-waste management with energy access and enterprise development, the session presents a practical pathway for building a circular energy ecosystem in Sierra Leone.
